Parag Shah, President of Gem International, New York, is a third-generation diamantaire and has been involved in the family business for his entire career.
While still in high school, Parag grew up around the industry and helped set up one of the first computer accounting systems in the diamond industry on 47th St. After graduating from New York University, he left for Mumbai to study diamond manufacturing, grading, and buying. Shortly after, he and his father started a branch office in Mumbai and Antwerp.
In the late 1990s, Parag started researching diamond cuts and patented two new round cuts. After the financial crisis and retirement of the patriarch, Parag steered the business again to new custom jewelry manufacturing territories.
In addition to serving as president of Gem International, Parag has served as Treasurer of the DMIA, Executive Board member of the DMIA, the 24 Karat Club of New York, and director of the Indian Diamond & Color Stone Association (IDCA).
